West Ham staged a late comeback to wrestle control away from AZ Alkmaar in their Europa Conference League semi-final first leg.

And it was aided by former Arsenal loanee Mat Ryan, who gave away a penalty when he tried to punch the ball away when a cross came in.

But instead of getting the ball, the Australia international whacked a leaping Jarrod Bowen in the face at the London Stadium

The referee had no doubts as he pointed to the spot, giving West Ham a much-needed oomph in a tie they have hardly impressed in.

And Said Benrahma made no mistake from 12 yards out in the 67th minute, as he lashed home his spot-kick with extreme power.

The penalty turned out to be crucial for David Moyes, who saw his side take the lead shortly after as the momentum changed.

Speaking on talkSPORT, former Hammers star Alvin Martin said: “Game back on now!

“There are going to be questions now around Alkmaar. But you have to give credit to Benrahma.

West Ham went on to take the lead

“He looks the most confident out of all the players on the pitch.”

Michail Antonio got a scrappy goal after tucking in from a corner when the ball was cleared off the line, only for the striker to throw a boot at it and grab the goal.

It saw West Ham take the lead and secure a 2-1 win, which could be vital as they travel to the Netherlands next week for the second leg.

AZ Alkmaar had scored the opener in the first-half when Tijjani Reijnders let loose from 30 yards out with an absolute corker.

However, Alphonse Areola will not want to look back on it as he should have saved it but he was not quick enough across his line.

West Ham protested, though, as they believed that Lucas Paqueta was fouled in the build-up.

VAR took a look at the incident but decided against overturning the goal, much to the home side’s disdain.

The two teams face each other in Holland next week, with the victor to face either Fiorentina or Basel in the final.
